I just completed my 5th donor cycle thru SPCT. I did my 1st-3rd while I was in law school and did the others after I had begun my career just because my experience was so positive. Because I was in school and had a hard time making calls during the day, my case manager and the director gave me their cell and home phone numbers. We spoke often at night and on weekends.

I am ready to do another.

I've done two cycles with Surrogate Parenting Center of TExas. I had a wonderful experience both times.

    My story:
The clinic we used had a wonderful donor go through who was willing to donate again, so we thought- easy, we'll just go with her! Thus, we were "forced" to use whatever agency she was with, SPCT. This "agency" does both egg donation & surrogacy.
The clinic told us this agency was 2nd tier, their donors weren't the most responsible & they never usually recommend this agency. However, the donor that had just gone through was actually wonderful, made all her appts, took her meds perfectly and provided a ton of PGD normals. We thought we finally got a lucky break as we were able to cycle right away. (This was IVF #9 for us; unexplained infertility dx, FYI)
All was set, my surrogate (NOT through her) was on meds, the cycle was paid, we had flights to TX, & after losing our IVF #8 baby at 20 wks a few months prior, were really banking on this, our 9th IVF (we are unexplained, I am only 33 years old.) I get a phonecall at work that no one has heard from my egg donor, then later that the agency (NOT the doctor's office- 1st clue) of a cryptic email saying she was in a small car accident and being kept overnight for observation but still wanted to donate and not want to mess up our cycle. The agency told the clinic about the email, the doc said no problem, come in RIGHT away and we'll switch you to an Antagon cycle since you already missed the cutoff to begin Lupron.
That was it- noone ever heard from her ever again. I had already paid the $5,500 in donor comp & a whopping $3,500 agency fee, of which the agency did NOTHING since I came to them with the donor I wanted.

We were informed she had disappeared on 6/17. I did not receive one penny back from Merritt until October. She said the agency fee is non-refundable but that the donor comp is. However, I only signed the contract b/c because we were led to believe that we were being paired with a respectable donor that SPCT had properly screened (not the case). After weeks & weeks of no contact, not getting them on the phone or via email, they finally said the "check is in the mail." Guess what? NO check. It took almost another month to actually see a check, and I believe she lied when she said the 1st check went out, that she cancelled it, had reissued a new one. There was zero record, no FedEx tracking #, we never got anything in the mail.

At this point, I have told them my Texas lawyer is contacting them. I am active in RESOLVE and know many people there and will make sure they know of this "business."
I don't trust them; and because our GC is in Texas I randomly have heard of other surros in the area who use them and they, well, let's say they are not being surros for what I believe are the right reasons. That's just my opinion, of course, but I've been doing this long enough to know what a truly good hearted surrogate does it for….

Other people have contacted me after reading my story, and it's heartbreaking how she scams vulnerable couples. My story isn't even that bad compared to others. She is unprofessional, unethical, & immoral. Feel free to contact me at waitinginsunshine@gmail.com to share your story, as I am trying to get a bunch of us together to stop this from happening to others.

One final note: Her website is a ".org" site- used for non-profit organaziations. She is a FOR profit business, & if she is not paying taxes bc she says she is "non-profit," well, that's a federal offense.

We had a HORRIBLE experience too! We were unable to carry our own baby so contracted through SPCT, Merrit, to find a surrogate. AFTER paying the $17,500 UP front, prior to meeting the surrogate, once we did meet the surrogate, Merrit lied to us OVER and OVER and that was when we could even get her to answer the phone. Turns out, she was lying to the surrogate too. We felt like we'd already lost so much money that it just wasn't emotionally or economically doable to legally pursue her. JUST devastating that someone who "claims" to be a christian would do this!! Too bad a GROUP of us couldn't pursue her and get her shut down so she can't do this to other loving families who are simply trying to have a baby.

    Do your research.

I donated eggs with Merritt and was a surrogate with her. it took me months to get paid for the egg donation and she was months behind on my monthly payments throughout the surrogacy. she is a liar and takes your money, she did it to my IPs too. im going elsewhere for now on.

I have been through hell as a donor with Merritt’s “agency”, SPCT. It took Merritt nearly 4 months to pay me my donor fee.. that was after hundreds of e-mails, phone calls and text messages begging her to pay me. I am still owed nearly $800 in contractual fees. Merritt now claims she is closing SPCT due to financial reasons. I have no doubt Merritt is evading taxes (SPCT is classified as a “non-profit organization) not paying donors or couples and at the very least, operating unethically and no doubt illegally.

PLEASE….. look elsewhere….. egg donation is done professionally and ethically in most cases with other agencies!

EMAIL ME AT DREAMWORTHKEEPING2415@GMAIL.COM. I will provide you with my phone number through e-mail.

I know there are countless donors and recipient couples who have been scammed, lied to, manipulated or strung along. This woman needs to be brought to justice through a class-action lawsuit.

I have found in both my experiences and others who have reached out to me that Merritt Patterson Morrison Turner (she has many alias)does *not* run a legitimate organization. She preys on vulnerable couples looking to build their family, she does not pay her egg donors or her surrogates, she ignores emails and phones calls, and like the poster above, I got the whole “your check is in the mail” song. She basically made up an egg donor for us, and refused to refund our agency fee! Her website is also a “.org” site, and she is obviously not a not-for-profit organization. She also works for the Park Cities People local newspaper as a contributing blogger and podcaster, and seems to care about that more than her clients. It’s women like Merritt that give artificial reproductive technology a bad name, and it’s a shame people like her exist to scam us. STAY AWAY.

UPDATE on Merritt Morrison Patterson Turner: She has sent an email out that she is closing her doors to financial reasons. Many egg donors and surrogates have NOT BEEN COMPENSATED.

Additionally, if you recently had a woman donate her eggs via an IVF cycle, or hired a surrogate through SPCT, there is a strong possibility that your donor/surrogate did not receive her compensation, nor will she going forward. Your money was stolen.

There is a group of us willing to come forward and make sure she never victimizes another couple, donor, or surrogate again. If you are interested in joining our group (you can remain anonymous, of course), please feel free to contact us at waitinginsunshine@gmail.com

    Thank you!

I am a current egg donor with (the now closed down) SPCT. I have donated elsewhere 4 times prior and never had an issue but Merritt is sketchy and unreliable. I am fearful she does not plan to pay me after all is said and done. She has lied many times, about simple things such as flight times or calling a hotel, I cannot imagine how she has stayed in business this long. Please send me any information you know about her, ie address, phone number, people she knows…anything that would allow me to track her down if needed. Thank you.

A local TV channel just did a story on M. Patterson and her agency tonight. The “teaser” is up on the wfaa.com site, but not the full story yet.
